SAN FRANCISCO _ When Quintin Gonzales came home from Boy Scout camp feeling sick, his mother figured he had the flu. When parasites were diagnosed, the Richmond, Calif., woman knew she had two serious problems: how to get him well and how to get time off work to nurse him.

Carol Griffin, Quintin's mother, told a panel Monday how grateful she is for the Family Medical Leave Act of 1993. The federal law guarantees 45 million American workers such as Griffin the right to take up to 12 weeks unpaid leave from work to attend to a new birth, adoption or a serious illness in a relative or spouse.
