A representation in mathematics involves some combination of either written symbols, real objects, or mental images (Janvier, 1987). Regardless of the combination, the construction of a representation is critical for understanding the quantitative relationships expressed in a problem in order to be able to solve it (Geary, 1996; Mayer & Hegarty, 1996).
