FOSTER CITY, Cal.--Steve Race has resigned as president of Sony Computer Entertainment, just one month shy of the debut of the company's PlayStation video game system.

While the company would not comment on the specifics of Race's departure, industry insiders said there had been a power struggle within Sony Computer Entertainment over the marketing and promotion of the 32-bit, CD-based PlayStation, which will compete with the recently released Sega Saturn and the Super NES from Nintendo of America.

The PlayStation is slated to ship nationwide in early September at a suggested retail price of $299, without bundled software.
