SAN DIEGO -- Obese patients have higher serum levels of the fat-soluble vitamins A and E than do their thinner counterparts, according to an analysis of data from the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.
The finding suggests that moderate to high dosages of fat-soluble vitamin supplements may cause vitamin toxicity in obese patients. "Physicians and nurses should be careful about fat-soluble vitamin supplementation" in such patients, the study's primary investigator, Nasser Samadi, Ph.D., said in an interview during a poster session at the annual meeting of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry.
