PARISH councillor Gerard Smith was beaten to within inches of his life outside his own home.
Despite his attacker being convicted, he and his wife Sheila have been forced to sell up and flee the home they loved in Winlaton, Gateshead.
The beating was so severe that at one point Gerard's son was told to say his last goodbyes to his dad.
