A PLEA to halt the destruction of part of Formby's famous red squirrel refuge has been rejected - even though the Government admits squirrel numbers will probably dip.
Environment Secretary Hilary Benn has insisted plans to fell 75 hectares of woodland in Sefton - almost one quarter of the coastal woods - must go ahead.
Mr Benn rejected an appeal by 5,000 protesters to order a judicial review into Natural England's proposals, giving the organisation the green light to apply for a felling licence. The decision came despite Mr Benn admitting: "It is anticipated that habitat that could support up to ...
