CARACAS, Venezuela, Nov. 23, 2007 (IPS) -- Colombian President lvaro Uribe has put an end to Venezuelan President Hugo Ch vez's efforts to free 45 hostages held by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, citing a short phone conversation that occurred between Ch vez and Colombia's army chief as his reason.

"Hey, I want to ask you a question. How many police officers and soldiers are being held hostage by the FARC?" Ch vez reportedly asked Colombian army chief Gen. Mario Montoya. The telephone conversation lasted maybe half a minute, but the consequences were dire.
