CONTRACTS EXPIRE AT DETROIT NEWSPAPERS, BUT WORKERS STAY ON THE JOB, ACCORDING TO COMPANY OFFICIALS AT DETROIT NEWSPAPERS

DETROIT, July 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Contracts between Detroit Newspapers and six unions expired Sunday at 6:00 p.m., according to company officials at Detroit Newspapers. But company officials said workers would not be locked out and that newspaper workers should report to work as usual while talks continue Monday.

Frank Vega, president and chief executive officer of Detroit Newspapers, which publishes and distributes The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press, said the company would not extend the contracts any further because of concerns that the unions were stalling. The contracts originally were due to expire April 30, but had been extended by both sides on a day-to-day basis.
