As most observers expected, after all of the votes had been hand counted and tallied, Konstantina B. Lukes was confirmed as Worcester's first popularly elected female mayor. It is a milestone the city can celebrate at last.
The final tally of 7,507 votes for Mrs. Lukes and 7,391 for Frederick C. Rushton - a margin of 116 votes out of 21,628 votes counted - only slightly altered the 105-vote margin declared on Election Day.
The process was costly and potentially divisive, but there were some collateral benefits.
First, it removed all doubt about whether the mayoral election result announced Nov. 6 was the result voters intended. Now, ...
