While the Historical Society of Alberta celebrates its centennial in 2007, its oldest local chapter has yet to mark its fiftieth anniversary. The Society's Calgary Branch was formally established on March 6, 1959. It was renamed the Chinook Country Chapter in 1970, and its present designation dates from 1993 when it was legally incorporated as the Chinook Country Historical Society. But, as Sir Francis Drake observed centuries ago, "There must be a beginning of any great matter." The chapter's antecedents predate the establishment of the HSA itself.
