Hardly two years ago, President Thabo Mbeki was considered an underdog, pummelled and humiliated by his members at the national general council, with some warning that he would be ejected at the next conference.
Some were calling for a special conference, with leaders such as former Limpopo premier Ngoako Ramatlhodi saying that Mbeki would "run away naked".
When the policy conference discussed leadership and the majority of commissions demanded that the ANC presi-dent must be the country's president, there was an overwhelming rejection of Mbeki.
