When the city of Hammond, IN, on Lake Michigan, announced at the start of the 2006 boating season that it would close a 900-slip marina, displaced boaters had to scramble for slip space all around southern Lake Michigan (see "900 Slips Closed for Casino, BoatU.S. Magazine, May 2006).
City officials said the marina had to go to accommodate expansion of a floating gambling casino but that it would reopen in time for the 2008 season--"with new and better slips"--to serve boaters throughout southern Lake Michigan.
