Traditional microbiologic paradigms are straightforward and easy to understand and apply, but they likely oversimplify what actually occurs in the midst of an infection. Paradigms for infections of the ear are no exception. Ear infections are the most common reason for which antibiotics are prescribed for children in the United States, and they attract as much or more research attention as other infections do. Although research has answered many questions about ear infections, it has raised many, as well. Overall, we understand very little about the microbial community dynamics that underlie these infections.
