Scattered by the wind: the Lost Settlement of Diamond City.

In the early 1880s, Diamond City was a thriving fishing and whaling community on the island of Shackleford Banks, North Carolina. Hundreds of people made their home there, living off the abundant marine life that swam offshore. By 1902, Diamond City was a ghost town, with only a handful of abandoned buildings to offer a sad reminder of what the community used to be. The village's residents had packed up their belongings and uprooted their lives to move to nearby towns after a hurricane in 1899, one of the most destructive in U.S. history, struck a final blow and convinced the population that life on the island was no longer tenable.
