"HOW can you possibly justify publishing economic indicators for western Germany only, five years after the reunification of east and west?" The Economist has received many letters asking this question. The answer is that, whilst the unification of Germany occurred with breakneck speed, many of its economic statistics have remained as divided as they were during the frostiest days of the cold war.
About half of the German statistics in our weekly economic indicators (see pages 118-120) still relate only to western Germany. Figures for the money supply and trade have been available for the whole of Germany since 1990. But unified figures for unemployment and industrial ...
