Stewart P. Oakley's latest book is a study of the diplomatic context of war in the Baltic from 1560 to 1790, covering nearly all the ins and outs of more than two centuries of complex international relations among Denmark, Sweden, Brandenburg-Prussia, Russia, and Poland, to tame only the most deeply involved Baltic states. This is a very competent though equally compact treatment of the broad outlines of the diplomatic history of the region. Appended to the main text are an epilogue, covering the period 1790 to 1815, and a postlude covering the post-1815 period to the present.
