Forest burning as counterinsurgency in Turkish-Kurdistan: an analysis from space.(Report)

Summary

From the early 1990s up to 2006, the Turkish Army was reported to have used the burning of forests, fields and villages in the Kurdish areas as a strategy in the conflict against the insurgent PKK. This article evaluates this claim through the use of satellite images. The processed satellite images revealed significant forest burning. Furthermore, the crossing of the satellite data with geo-referenced eyewitness accounts showed that forest burnings went often accompanied with village destruction.
