The universe, said J. B. S. Haldane, is not only queerer than we suppose, but queerer than we can suppose. One of the queerest things about it is that its properties at the very largest scales--galactic superclusters--are very intimately related to those at the very smallest--subatomic particles and the teeny "strings" of which they may (or may not) be composed.
