Verify sweatshops are not used
The city of Syracuse says it isn't purchasing manhole covers from a sweatshop in India, as was suggested in a story published last week in The New York Times.
That's a relief.
Shakti Industries in Haora has barely clothed, barefoot men scooping up molten iron and pouring it into casts for manhole covers. Some of the finished products had the name "Syracuse" stamped on them, and the plant manager said Syracuse was a customer.
But the city and Onondaga County purchase covers through Cicero-based Syracuse Casting, which says it buys them from North American foundries. The company says it has purchased covers ...
