Kevin Clarke does a disservice to U.S. CATHOLIC readers by linking the collapse of the I-31 bridge to the war on terror and tax cuts ("Cracks in the system," Margin Notes, October). Both federal and state governments collect more than enough money each year in gasoline taxes and highway usage fees to fully support the maintenance of the highways.

Most of the federal government's money is diverted primarily to social services. Just look at your own state budget's growth over the last 10 years and federal entitlements like the prescription ...
