The Japanese prime minister, Tomiichi Murayama, made a "heartfelt apology" for atrocities Japan committed in the second world war. The apology, more explicit than earlier expressions of "remorse", was endorsed by the' cabinet. Skeptics noted that earlier in the year the Diet had refused to apologise.
China conducted an underground nuclear test, its second this year, at a site in its remote western desert.
China executed 16 people as part of a clean-up of Beijing, where a United Nations women's conference starts next week. About 40,000 foreign visitors are expected at the conference and at an associated women's forum.
