WASHINGTON -- The debate over what retailers can do to prevent sweatshop conditions in apparel manufacturing heated up Tuesday, as the probe grows into the El Monte, Calif., factory that allegedly imprisoned its immigrant workers.
Retail industry spokesmen said the stores are doing all they can to insure they don't buy domestic apparel made in sweatshops and are questioning a call by the Labor Department for stores to do more.
