Most medical officers assigned to rural hospitals in Mozambique are recent graduates with very little surgical training and experience, whereas tecnicos de cirurgia (non-physicians performing surgery, TCs) have at least three years of surgical training and experience. TCs have been performing major surgery in Mozambique for more than 20 years. They do not have medical degrees but have been selected for surgical training from among other medically-trained technicians or nurses.
