The former head of oil transportation firm Azpetrol, Rafik Aliyev, was sentenced to nine years in jail at the end of a five-and-a-half month trial in Baku last week, while his brother, Farhad Aliyev, the former economic development minister, was given a 10-year term.

The brothers, who are not related to Azeri President Ilham Aliyev, were arrested in October 2005 on the eve of parliamentary elections and were initially charged with attempting to stage a coup, although these were later changed to "economic crimes" including tax evasion and corruption.
