The Weimar Republic has always been an object of fascination for historians as the last regime in Germany prior to the barbarism of the Third Reich. Was the descent into Nazism inevitable, or did the Republic at some stage take the wrong turning and spurn real opportunities for establishing a lasting democracy? In his substantial new survey E.J.
