English-language general histories of France have, for the Early Modern period at least. been remarkable for their scarcity in recent decades. The most comprehensive treatment of sixteenth-century France, that of J.H.M. Salmon, dates from 1975, while the seventeenth century can boast of nothing comparable since the war. This makes Blackwells' decision to translate the recent Hachette History of France as a series all the more unusual and welcome.
