The University of Rhode Island was initially known as the Rhode Island College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. The Hatch Act of 1887 authorized $5,000 annually to each state for agriculture research. For a total of $5,000, the 140-acre Oliver Watson Farm was purchased as a site for the school.
The old farmhouse, now restored and listed as an historic landmark, still stands on the campus.
The origin of the ram as Rhode Island's mascot dates back to the university's emphasis on agriculture when the school was founded in 1892. On November 21, 1929, the first actual "live" ram made an appearance for the school. On March 8, 1923, the ...
