July 11--A questionable financial deal involving a personal loan is behind the removal of G. Kirk Raab as chief executive of Genentech Inc., the South San Francisco-based biotechnology giant.
Company directors said Monday that Raab, whose total compensation including stock options was at least $3.5 million last year, was fired Friday and replaced by long-time vice president Arthur D. Levinson, a respected researcher who has headed many of the company's key product development projects in recent years.
