Mary Jo Fernandes, the No. 13 seed and the second ranked American, felt Graf-inflicted pain Tuesday on Centre Court. It was frightening.
The only colors that Fraulein Steffi allowed Fernandes to see on America's Independence Day at Wimbledon were the black and blue she administered, not Uncle Sam's red, white and blue.
Mary Jo is a formidable opponent for anyone but Graf, who won convincingly, 6-3, 6-0 in one hour and three minutes. It was Graf's 12th win against Fernandes in as many career meetings.
