ST. PAUL, Minn. _ Millions of Americans are wrongly blaming milk for bouts of gas, diarrhea and bloating, researchers in the Twin Cities are saying.
Although 50 million people in the country cannot properly digest milk, they can drink up to 8 ounces a day without developing abnormal digestive problems, according to researchers at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center and the University of Minnesota.
As a result, people who suffer from what is called lactose intolerance do not have to purchase digestive aids in order to consume small quantities of milk, said Dr. Michael Levitt, chief of research at the medical center and a professor of medicine at the University of ...
