TOKYO _ In the most straightforward language a Japanese leader has used yet, Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama on Tuesday offered his ``heartfelt apology'' for the ``tremendous damage and suffering'' this county inflicted on other nations during World War II.
Speaking on the occasion of Japan's surrender to the Western allies 50 years ago, Murayama also acknowledged that Imperial Japan's wartime policy, which began with its attack on the U.S. Navy base at Pearl Harbor, had been one of ``aggression'' and had been ``mistaken.''
