Fans of the Macintosh sighed in relief late last fall when Apple announced its commitment to licensing the Macintosh Operating System. Developers and industry observers had hammered on Apple for years to license the OS, but Apple stubbornly refused. When Apple finally said it would share its crown jewels, those of us who have championed the Mac over the years looked at each other and smiled, but these were smiles laced with tension.
