Phosphorus (P) is a limiting nutrient for the growth of plants and animals and is often supplemented in feeds and applied as fertilizers to cropland. Over-applications of P in excess of growth requirements have resulted in accumulations of P in the soils of some agricultural regions. The excess P can move into surface water bodies via runoff, resulting in the eutrophication of receiving fresh waters (Carpenter et al. 1998). The susceptibility of an agricultural landscape to P loss by runoff needs to be determined, particularly at field, hillslope and catchment scales (Haygarth et al. 2005).
