SEVENS rugby is fast and spectacular, but it's not quite the full shilling. It doesn't have the crash and the grunt of the 15-man game. It is slightly unfulfilling, like low-alcohol beer or kissing your cousin.
It rates well above beach rugby, yet seven-a-side strangely fails to stir the excitement you get watching even a third-division club game in the 15-man code.
Those of us who grew up with the oval ball would watch it in preference to soccer - though that's a close call because some of the football is full of grace and the most astonishing ball skills. Anything is better than watching basketball.
