WORCESTER - As part of the Federal Communications Commission's 2005 order to address the problem of mobile phone interference with public safety radios across the country, the city and Sprint Nextel reached an agreement earlier this month for the communications company to replace or reprogram roughly 2,500 city radios.
In a letter to city councilors, City Manager Michael V. O'Brien said 1,534 city-owned radios used by all departments - police, fire and public works and parks being the biggest users - will be replaced.
