SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. -- Obstructive sleep apnea is often associated with obesity, especially in men, but other patients are also vulnerable, Dr. Brian A. Boehlecke advised at a meeting on sleep medicine sponsored by the American College of Chest Physicians.
Hormonal changes in postmenopausal women, craniofacial abnormalities in Asians, and what could be a genetic propensity in African Americans put these groups at risk of the sleep disorder, according to Dr. Boehlecke, a professor of medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
