HONG KONG - It used to be a Rolex or a top of the range Mercedes. Now the ultimate status symbol for Asia's super rich is the Italian white truffle.

Over the last three years some of Asia's wealthiest tycoons have put up record amounts of cash at auctions to become the proud owners of huge specimens of the delicacy known as "white gold" because of its rarity and high price.
