Watching "The Kite Runner," I kept waiting for someone like Gene Hackman to show up. Typically when Hollywood does a drama set in the Third World, they shoehorn in a recognizable Western (i.e. white) face - Kevin Kline in "Cry Freedom," James MacAvoy in "The Last King of Scotland" - assuming American audiences need to see every movie from a Western perspective.

There's none of that in "The Kite Runner." Director Marc Forster ("Monster's Ball") and writer David Benioff ("The 25th Hour") wisely realized that Khaled Hosseini's novel was so popular because it's just a great story and didn't need to be watered down or Americanized to make ...
