A JUDGE has awarded a have-a-go-hero [pounds sterling]500 because he foiled an armed robbery at a city shop with no thought for his own safety.
The unusual recognition came after a court heard how Gerry Roche (44), who had been enjoying a pint at his local pub, ran with a pool cue to tackle a robber with a gun and an accomplice with a samurai sword after answering a call for help.
The drama began when the robbers, violent Simon Rees (29) and Simon Munns (20) burst into the Werrington Convenience Store, in Hodgson Avenue, Werrington, Peterborough, on Sunday, April 8.
