MARYVILLE, Ill. -- When Shirley and Harold Hunsinger built their house next to a small lake here in 1986, they chose to make it as energy efficient as possible.
Eight-inch walls were fully insulated, ceilings and attics were insulated to recommended maximums, and high-efficiency glass went into every window. "Styrofoam" panels were adhered to the exterior basement walls, and 2-by-4 studded walls with insulation were built inside the basement.
The insulated electric water heater got a timer. The thermostatic controls were equipped with timers to regulate the cycling of electric hot water baseboard heaters, two 8-SEER air conditioners, and a heat pump.
