Among 19th-century Indian scholars, Pandit Bhagwanlal Indraji (1839-88) (figure 1) is well-known for his contribution to the fields of archaeology, epigraphy, and numismatics, but not many know that he also photographed in those days when photography was still new. Bhagwanlal was closely associated with the Asiatic Society of Mumbai, then known as the Bombay Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society, which honoured him as a Fellow. He undertook tours to many archaeological and historical sites of India such as Ajanta, Bagh, Ujjain, Dhar, Mandu, Sanchi, Udayagiri, Eran, Varanasi, Mankuwar, Gadhva, Bodh Gaya, Patna, Bhubaneswar, Delhi, Kalsi, ...
