In Lane County, no communities are betting on faster growth than Veneta and Lowell.
Both cities are planning for future populations well above recent long-term estimates. Critics say citizens could get stuck with a big bill for future infrastructure if officials guess wrong, although the two cities defend their forecast of rapid population growth.
The Lane Council of Governments, which creates population forecasts for the county government, approved local city-by-city projections two years ago.
