A new radio-frequency catheter is being used to treat some patients with varicose veins, according to an October 3, 2007, news release from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, California. An estimated 25 million Americans, most of whom are women, suffer from varicose veins, a condition usually caused by Leaky vanes in the saphenous veins of the legs. The condition produces bulging veins in the legs that often are painful. Those at greatest risk for varicose veins include pregnant women, chefs, nurses, waitresses, hairdressers, and anyone whose job requires prolonged sitting or standing.
