Each year, the Joint Commission releases an updated set of National Patient Safety Goals to promote specific improvements in patient safety. Traditionally, these goals are presented in this column, with an emphasis on what new goals and requirements have been added and what has changed. For 2008, rather than presenting a detailed discussion of the National Patient Safety Goals, this column will discuss a number of safety goals specific to perioperative nurses. These goals are congruent with the Joint Commission's Patient Safety Goals. It is hoped that nurses will consider these goals as a personal framework for professional development in 2008.
