John Major's reshuffle of the Cabinet has stunned scientists. In an unexpected move, science has lost its minister as the Department of Trade and Industry swallows up the Office of Science and Technology (OST). Fears are rising that this will undermine basic research.
In 1992, Major created the OST under the responsibility of the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and placed it under the Cabinet Office's jurisdiction. The scientific community were pleased to have a minister fighting its corner at the highest level of government and were encouraged by signs of a coherent policy for science and technology.
