On Aug. 1, New York's Pennsylvania Station will mark the 85th anniversary of its dedication. But present owner Amtrak and its Long Island Rail Road and New Jersey Transit tenants are likely to be too busy renewing and rebuilding the venerable station to do much celebrating.
With a weekday traffic that is now close to 300,000 daily passengers and 800 train movements, Penn Station is the busiest in North America. That's expected to continue to grow, and all three railroads are at work on capital projects that will improve operations and increase capacity.
