When I hear someone say "fried apple pies or apple turnovers it always takes me back to the process of home preserving the apple slices. In Owensboro, Kentucky in 1945-1947 we "dried" our own apple slices. Mom and Dad did not have much money, and certainly none for something Like store-bought dried apples, so we preserved what we ate.
We lived in a farming area of the county and getting apples was no problem as long as you were willing to go pick them. I remember one neighbor in particular who insisted that we come and pick as many as we wanted. These farmers were primarily of German descent and they all had fruit and nut trees and grape arbors.
