Graubunden has a turbulent history. After occupation by Austria and France, and upon losing the Valtelinne valley region, the 300-year-old free state joined the Swiss Confederation in 1803. Today, it is a modern canton with about 187,000 inhabitants and more than 10 million holiday and day-trip visitors each year.
Despite the low population density of Graubunden, also known as the Grisons, incomes are around the Swiss average. In 2005, the Swiss average income was SFr 54,031; Graubunden's average was SFr 49,355.
