Graubunden has a turbulent history. After occupation by Austria and France, and upon losing the Valtelinne valley region, the 300-year-old free state joined the Swiss Confederation in 1803. Today, it is a modern canton with about 187,000 inhabitants and more than 10 million holiday and day-trip visitors each year.

Despite the low population density of Graubunden, also known as the Grisons, incomes are around the Swiss average.
