NEW fishing quotas have been given a mixed reception by Scarborough's fishermen.
The amount of North Sea cod that can be caught will go up by 11 per cent - the first rise for 10 years - but there will be a cutback in the number of days individual boats can sail.
Scarborough fishermen's leader Fred Normandale, who was in Brussels during the talks, said: "They have given with one hand and taken away with the other."
But he felt the Government team, led by fisheries minister Jonathan Shaw, should be given "full marks" for the way they conducted the negotiations. "I think they tried very hard."
