SCHENECTADY - A newcomer driving west on Union Street into Schenectady might think downtown must be close.
But downtown is actually still two miles away. What a driver really sees is a six-block mix of 79 local and national businesses that attract consumers from the city and beyond. The district has stayed vital in good measure because of its still-robust neighboring residential areas.
The business core along that stretch of Union Street has survived as General Electric slashed local jobs and as retailers fled Schenectady's downtown on State Street.
